Microwavable Bowl Cozies Tutorial

These bowl cozies are fast and easy to put together! With the Warm Tater batting, these cozies act as an insulator and a built in hot pad for the bowls as they are warming up in the microwave.

Supplies (to make one cozy):
  • 2 10-inch squares of fabric (can be the same color/fabric or two coordinating colors/prints)
  • 2 10-inch squares of Warm Tater batting
  • Coordinating Thread
  • Quilt Basting Spray
  • Marking Pen (we like the Frixion pens and highlighters)
  • DVD or CD for tracing circle shape and size
  • Sewing Machine

Instructions:
  1. Place one fabric square on top of one square of Warm Tater, basting together with spray adhesive. Make two.
  2. Draw lines from corner to corner and vertical and horizontal lines on the Warm Tater side. Trace a circle in the middle of the square using a DVD or CD, line up the holes in the DVD with the lines you have already drawn.
  3. Sew all four lines. Do not sew the circle yet.
  4. You will make four darts on the vertical and horizontal lines on each piece. Fold the square in half on the sewn line. Measure over 1-inch from the fold, draw a line from the top of the fold to the circle, do this on all 4 sides and sew darts. Trim darts to 1/4".
  5. Sew the circle on both sandwich pieces.
  6. Put the two [pieces right sides together and sew a 1/4" seam around all four sides, leave approximately 4" to turn cozy. Trim corners and turn.
  7. Stitch opening closed. Top stitch 1/4" near the edge all the way around the cozy. You now have a finished bowl cozy.

  1. can you actually heat the bowls in the microwave with the cozies with them? or just use the cozies after the bowl has been heated?

    1. You can heat the bowls in the cozies in the microwave. The Warm Tater batting heats well and then holds in the heat to keep your bowl warm.

    2. Both. Using the cosy with the bowl already in it to heat up food in the microwave saves getting scorched fingers! I cook my porridge in the microwave of a morning in one of these. They work well.

  2. I'm not familiar with Warm Tater batting. I have a lot of Warm & Natural. Would that work as well? TIA

    1. It will if it's 100% cotton with no glues. I believe my 100% cotton batting was W&N and it had no glues etc and I have made dozens of these.

    2. The Warm and Natural is not 100% Cotton Batting...the best one to use is the Warm and Plush batting which is 100% Cotton...I made one to test with the Warm and Natural, and it was smoking in my microwave...

  3. The warm and natural batting is not 100% cotton batting...the best one to buy and use is the Warm and Plush batting which the warm company says is similar to the Warm Tater batting they discontinued... I made a bowl to test with the warm and natural batting, and it was smoking in my microwave, so I suggest not using that! You must make sure you use 100% cotton fabric, 100% cotton Thread, and 100% cotton batting or you could cause a fire in your microwave if you don't.

  4. Warm and Natural batting is not 100% cotton, and should not be used in making these bowls... I researched, and although the Warm Tater is discontinued, the warm company has made a 100% cotton batting similar to this called Warm and Plush that is completely safe to use in the microwave. You HAVE to make sure that everything you use to make these are 100% cotton! That means 100% cotton fabric, 100% cotton Thread, and 100% cotton batting...I tested making one with the warm and natural batting and it was smoking in my microwave...so please be safe and make sure your using ALL 100% COTTON MATERIALS!!!

  5. Wow, I called the warm and natural batting company and ask that question. She told that it would be fine since it was 100% cotton. I wondered who I was talking to. Since you tried it, I will do as you sayl. What kind can you buy to use? You can use the potato batting right???.

    1. Bipp,
I have had customers that have used the Warm & Natural without any problem. But I had one that used it, popped the bowl in the microwave and the cozy actually burned in one spot. The only thing we could figure was that it was the batting. Use Warm and Plush to be safe.

  6. Pellon has a product called Wrap N Zap that is advertised as a microwaveable fill for these projects

  7. Could it have been the spray baste that caused the problem with the Warm and Natural batting? Maybe hand basting would be better?

  8. Can you put these in the washing machine?

  9. I have used wrap & zap & found it to be very inconsistent in thickness. Lots of thin spots. Glad to hear warm & plush will work.
